21st May 2024
Attention all patients, visitors and staff traveling to and from St. Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH) on Wednesday, 22nd May: Please be aware of significant traffic disruptions and road closures in the Dublin area due to the UEFA Europa League Final taking place at the Aviva Stadium.
Event details:
- Match: Bayern Leverkusen vs. Atalanta
- Date: Wednesday, 22nd May
- Kick-off: 8PM
- Gates Open: 5PM
- Attendance: Over 48,000 fans
Traffic management plan:
An extensive policing and traffic management plan will be in place to manage the large influx of football fans. The Gardaí have announced several road closures and anticipate heavy traffic in Dublin city centre and the Dublin 4 area throughout the day. Traffic congestion is expected to increase significantly following the match.
Road closures and traffic diversions:
Starting at 3PM, a vehicle cordon will be established on:
- Both sides of Lansdowne Road
- Both sides of Shelbourne Road
- Both sides of Bath Avenue
- Newbridge Avenue
- Herbert Road
- Lansdowne Lane (from Northumberland Road to Shelbourne Road)
- Lansdowne Park
Local residents will be allowed access with valid identification, but all traffic may be restricted due to high pedestrian volumes, especially in the two hours before and after the event.
Parking restrictions:
Parking will be prohibited from 7AM on match day at:
- Lansdowne Road
- Shelbourne Road
- Havelock Square
- Herbert Road
- Lansdowne Lane

Fan marches:
Supporters of both teams will march to the stadium:

- Bayer Leverkusen: From Shelbourne Park at 5:30PM via South Lotts Road and Bath Avenue.
Rolling road closures will be in effect to accommodate these marches.
Public transport adjustments:
Lansdowne Road Dart Station will close at 4PM. Passengers will be directed to use Grand Canal Dock or Sandymount stations, which will have additional management measures for queuing.
Taxi availability: Please note that getting a taxi may be challenging due to the expected high demand and traffic disruptions.
Traffic diversions:
- South-bound traffic on Grand Canal Street will access Merrion Road via Haddington Road and Northumberland Road and will access Strand Road and Sandymount via South Lotts Road and Irishtown.
- North-bound traffic will be diverted via Pembroke Road, Northumberland Road, Haddington Road, and Grand Canal Street.
Gardaí statement:
A Garda spokesperson emphasised that while traffic disruptions will be kept to a minimum, rolling road closures may be necessary for fan movements, potential protests, or other incidents. The traffic diversions and road closures will remain until the event concludes and pedestrian traffic clears.
