SVHG welcomes approval of issuing of tender for construction of new National Maternity Hospital

St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group (SVHG) welcomes the approval by Cabinet today of the business case for the relocation of the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street to the Group’s healthcare campus at Elm Park and for the issuing of a tender for the construction of a new National Maternity Hospital (NMH) at St. Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH).

Mr James Menton, Chair of SVHG said:  “Today’s announcement is an important milestone in the building of a new 244 bed maternity hospital and a national neonatology centre which will greatly enhance the delivery of care to women and newborn infants.  This very important day for women’s healthcare in Ireland represents the culmination of years of work by many people, both in SVHG and NMH,  the HSE and the Department of Health.  We look forward to working with the HSE and our colleagues in the NMH to bring this project to fruition”.

SVUH and NMH enjoy a long, well-established working relationship including shared clinical services and pathways and consultants working in both hospitals.  Bringing both hospitals onto one location will allow for the further expansion of services to provide best clinical outcomes for women and their babies.  It is well recognised that for optimal clinical outcomes, maternity services should be located with adult acute services and women attending the new NMH will have access to a full range of medical, surgical and support services from SVUH, one of Ireland’s largest acute hospitals, should the need arise.
