St. Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH) welcomes Government’s Plan for additional bed capacity
30th May 2024
St. Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH) welcomes yesterday’s announcement by the Government regarding the expansion of acute hospital bed capacity. The plan, which was unveiled at SVUH by Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly and Minister for Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform, Paschal Donohoe, outlines a comprehensive strategy to deliver 4,367 acute hospital in-patient beds by 2031.
The Acute Inpatient Hospital Bed Expansion Plan includes the delivery of 3,352 new beds, with an additional 355 replacement beds, bringing the total to 4,367. This substantial increase in bed capacity reflects a proactive response to the evolving healthcare needs of our nation’s population.
Since 2020, the government has already delivered 1,218 net additional acute hospital beds, marking the largest expansion of public acute hospital capacity in the history of the Health Service. SVUH recognises this investment as a significant step towards enhancing patient care and improving healthcare outcomes nationwide.
Professor Michael Keane, Interim CEO, St. Vincent’s University Hospital said, “We welcome the government’s commitment to bolstering hospital bed capacity across the country. This initiative aligns with SVUH’s dedication to providing exceptional patient care and ensuring equitable access to healthcare services for all.”
The plan emphasises the importance of balanced regional bed capacity to meet the diverse healthcare needs of communities throughout Ireland. Minister Donnelly highlighted the transformative impact of this initiative, stating, “The delivery of this Plan will result in the equivalent bed capacity of six large hospitals opening and will be a game-changer for patients and healthcare workers.”
This strategic expansion is underpinned by rigorous analysis and assessment, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and optimal service delivery. Minister Donohoe underscored the government’s commitment to healthcare reform and efficiency, stating, “We recognise the need for more reform, and I welcome the strong focus on this from Minister Donnelly.”
SVUH remains committed to its mission of excellence in clinical care, education and research. As a leading academic teaching hospital globally and among the few public hospitals in Ireland with Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, SVUH continues to set standards of excellence and innovation in healthcare delivery.
