– SVUH is the only public acute Level 4 hospital in Ireland to achieve JCI accreditation –
St. Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH) is proud to announce that it has successfully achieved Joint Commission International (JCI) Reaccreditation for the 5th consecutive time, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing commitment to the highest standards of patient care. The hospital is the only public, acute Level 4 hospital in Ireland to receive this prestigious accreditation and is among the first hospitals internationally to be assessed under the newly introduced 8th edition of the JCI standards, launched in January 2025. This achievement reaffirms its standing as one of the top healthcare institutions in Ireland and places it among an elite group of hospitals worldwide.
“It is with immense pride that we announce SVUH’s successful reaccreditation by JCI. This achievement is a testament to the dedication, professionalism and passion of all our staff, who work tirelessly to deliver exceptional care to our patients every day,” said Prof Michael Keane, Interim CEO of SVUH. “I would like to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our Quality and Patient Safety (QPS) team, whose meticulous attention to detail and commitment to continuous improvement played a crucial role in securing this accreditation. I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to every member of our staff – this reaccreditation would not have been possible without their unwavering dedication.”
JCI’s accreditation process evaluates hospitals on a range of factors, including patient safety, quality improvement and adherence to international healthcare standards. SVUH’s reaccreditation reflects the hospital’s excellence across these areas, with high praise given to many departments and initiatives, including the Virtual Ward, the Oncology Triage Programme and the Diabetes Centre, which was described as a “centre of excellence.”
The hospital’s commitment to patient safety and care was particularly evident in its approach to infection control, staff education and continuous improvement. Notable achievements highlighted by the JCI surveyors included the hospital’s exemplary practices in areas such as radiology, organ transplant services and critical care, as well as the exceptional collaboration with University College Dublin (UCD) in medical education.
Angela Smyth, Director of Quality and Patient Safety at SVUH, expressed her pride in the achievement, “This reaccreditation reflects the relentless dedication and expertise of our Quality and Patient Safety team, along with every staff member across SVUH. The process was a thorough and collaborative effort and it underscores our unwavering commitment to delivering the safest and highest-quality care to our patients. I am incredibly proud of how our teams came together to meet the challenge, embrace continuous improvement and ensure that patient safety remains at the forefront of everything we do. This recognition is a testament to their exceptional work.”
JCI accreditation is awarded to hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to the highest standards of care, safety and quality. SVUH’s reaccreditation reinforces its position as a leader in healthcare, providing patients with world-class care in a safe and supportive environment.
SVUH extends its thanks to all staff members for their continuous commitment to excellence, which has made this accreditation possible.
