HIV Care & U=U
HIV services – Support for People Living with HIV (PLWH)
At St. Vincent’s University Hospital, we provide compassionate confidential care to people living with HIV. Our HIV service is fully integrated into our general Infectious Diseases clinics and is supported by a skilled, multidisciplinary team including doctors, nurses and allied healthcare professionals.
We take a holistic, person-centred approach — recognising the medical needs, emotional well-being and life circumstances of each patient.
How to access our HIV service
You do not need a separate HIV clinic appointment — the service is embedded within our Infectious Diseases Clinics. At your first visit, you will meet our HIV nurse for initial assessments and investigations before seeing one of our consultant specialists.
We accept referrals from:
- Self-referrals
- Other healthcare providers nationally or internationally
- Non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
Appointments are required. We do not offer walk-in services.

Understanding U=U
U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) means that people living with HIV who are on effective treatment and maintain an undetectable viral load cannot sexually transmit HIV to their partners. This message has transformed HIV care and helped reduce stigma around HIV in Ireland and globally.
The HSE Sexual Health and Crisis Pregnancy Programme (SHCPP) launched a national campaign in 2020 to further raise awareness of U=U.
