SVUH achieves highest level of accreditation for Antimicrobial Stewardship and is the first hospital in Ireland to be designated a Centre of Excellence for Antimicrobial Stewardship
18th December 2024
We are delighted to share that St. Vincent’s University Hospital has achieved level 3 BSAC GAMSAS accreditation and is the first hospital in Ireland to be designated a Centre of Excellence for Antimicrobial Stewardship.
This global accreditation, awarded by the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC), reflects our hospital’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding antibiotics for today’s patients and generations to come.
Why this matters to our patients and staff
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest health challenges of our time. When bacteria, viruses and fungi no longer respond to treatments like antibiotics, infections become harder to treat, leading to longer hospital stays, increased risks, and poorer outcomes for patients.
At SVUH, we believe in taking action—ensuring antibiotics are used safely, effectively, and responsibly. Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) is a patient-centred approach that optimises how we prescribe and use antimicrobials, improving care today and protecting these life-saving medicines for the future.
A team effort for better outcomes
Achieving this accreditation was only possible thanks to the dedication of all our staff—nurses, doctors, pharmacists, the IPC team, microbiology laboratory and the AMS team—who work together every day to ensure antibiotics are used prudently and effectively.
Our shared commitment
This accreditation is a reflection of the culture of excellence at SVUH. Through education, guidelines, monitoring and teamwork, we are:
- Optimising antibiotic prescribing to improve patient outcomes
- Reducing the development of antibiotic resistance
- Protecting antibiotics so they remain effective for those who need them most
A thank you to our staff and patients
We would like to thank every staff member and our patients for supporting this critical work. Your dedication helps us lead the way in antimicrobial stewardship, ensuring safer care for all.
