SVUH Celebrates Nursing Excellence with 2024 Quality Improvement Projects Presentation Day

St. Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH) hosted a successful Nursing Quality Improvement Projects 2024 Presentation Day today, showcasing a series of innovative initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care across the hospital. The event, made possible by the Nursing Practice Development (NPD) team, highlighted the creativity, dedication and commitment of the nursing staff to continuous improvement and patient-centred care.
The day began with an address from Ann Flynn, Director of Nursing, followed by an inspiring keynote by Angela Smyth, Director of Quality and Patient Safety. Together, they set the stage for a day of collaboration and learning, emphasising the importance of quality improvement in healthcare.
The event featured a diverse range of presentations from across SVUH, including:
- Deteriorating Patient Trolley by Sinead Dodd (AMU) – A rapid response initiative for deteriorating patients
- Heroes to Make it Zero – Pressure Ulcer Prevention by Santhi Thomas & Lorraine McLean – Aiming to reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers
- Peritonitis Rates & Outcomes in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients by Jaspreet Kaur & Mary Edylyn (Dialysis) – Enhancing infection control strategies
- JAM (Just a Minute) Project by Grace O’Keefe & Lorna Flanagan (ED) – Improving real-time patient communication
- Eolas – ICU Education App by Ciara Moran (ICU) – Providing easy access to ICU training resources
- CORTRAK 2 – Enteral Access Training by Laiza Suarez (Our Lady’s) – Improving patient safety through guided tube placement
- A Print to Keep by Jaya Manoharan – Offering meaningful mementos for patients and families
- Multifactorial Falls Prevention Project by Mini Sathyabhama (St. Andrew’s) – Implementing a comprehensive approach to reduce falls
- Improving KPI through Herceptin Clinic Pathway by Gilbert Medrano (St. Anne’s) – Enhancing Key Performance Indicator tracking in oncology
- Maintaining Patient Confidentiality by Sachin Vanjare (St. Brigid’s) – Best practices for patient privacy

- Nebuliser Equipment Cleanliness by Etain Tighe (St. Christopher’s) – Ensuring proper respiratory equipment hygiene
- Pocket Guide for New Nurses by Premalatha Subbaiah (St. Laurence’s) – A new resource for onboarding staff
- B2B (Back to Bedside) by Manju Kumaraj (St. Lucy’s) – Refocusing nursing time directly with patients
- Intentional Rounding by Jismol Jose & Sinead O’Reilly – Reintroducing proactive, regular patient assessments
- SCOOP Box – Haematoma Post-Thyroid Surgery Initiative by Ida McLoughlin & Shijimol Kurian – A new approach to post-surgery care
- Discharge Process in TCU by Beena Saju – Streamlining the discharge pathway to improve patient transitions and reduce delays
- Virtual Ward Initiative by Josh Alonzo – Introducing the HSE Virtual Wards at SVUH
- Domestic Violence Pathway by Pamela O’Brien – Strengthening the ED pathway to support victims of domestic violence
This event marked a significant milestone in SVUH’s ongoing commitment to quality care, with each presentation reflecting the hospital’s dedication to innovative solutions and improving patient outcomes.
